History of the Alpha Sigma Chapter

In 2007, a handful of women decided to establish the first Latina sorority at Florida Gulf Coast University. Other sororities did not meet their expectations in terms of promoting and helping the Latino culture and community. After researching various organizations, these women learned of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc.

Over a period of two years, these women worked diligently to fundraise and gain support from the Florida Gulf Coast University Community. As an interest group, these women performed various community service activities with the Hermanas of SIA. From this interest group, four women were determined enough to pursue membership into the sorority.

In the fall of 2009, these four women became the founding line of the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc, founding the first Latina-based, multicultural membership sorority at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Since the chapter's founding at Florida Gulf Coast University, SIA has achieved numerous awards including: Highest Overall GPA, Highest Semester GPA, Most Spirited, Outstanding Diversity Program of the Year, and Outstanding Participation for Greek Week. Individually, our chapter members have earned awards such as Chapter President of the Year, Who's Who Among College and University Students, President's List, Dean's List, and initiated into FGCU's Hall of Fame.
