Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc.

In the mid 1980s, a group of women from four different universities in New York set out to create an organization that would meet their needs, help their communities, unite all women, and uphold a set of distinct goals. Although the sorority's history can be traced back to 1985 in Troy, New York, the sorority was founded on September 29, 1990 by thirteen inspiring women from SUNY Albany, SUNY Stonybrook, SUNY New Paltz, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Our thirteen founders are:

Dora Maria Abreu

Elizabeth Coats

Tina Colberg

Eulogia Diaz

Angelica Hernandez

Teresa Herrero

Norma Porras

Miriam Ramirez

Saida Rodriguez

Grecia Sanchez

Maria Trujillo

Clara Vasquez

Dulce Williams

It was during this year that these 13 phenomenal women united to create an organization that would promote excellence amongst women, the expansion of awareness of the Latino culture, and an infallible sisterhood. Our precious and rare Hermandad is not only a family unit, but also a vehicle for change. We emphasize the importance of education and knowledge through various educational workshops and involvement in our community. As an organization composed of strong and dedicated women, we strive to empower all women, both within and outside of the Hermandad.
